In a groundbreaking development, the recently inaugurated Special Intervention Squad (SIS) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has achieved unprecedented success under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, Over the span of two weeks, the squad’s operations have led to the apprehension of 139 suspects, the rescue of 154 kidnapped victims, and the recovery of a substantial arsenal, including 17 firearms and 604 pieces of ammunition.

The SIS, launched to reinforce the security apparatus in the FCT, demonstrated its effectiveness with notable achievements. Among the confiscated items are 3 GPR Chargers, 2 AK-47 rifles, 1 Type-06, 4 locally fabricated guns, 1 Beretta pistol, 2 Makarov pistols, and 4 locally fabricated pump-action guns. Additionally, the squad successfully seized 504 pieces of AK-47 ammunition and 100 pieces of AA ammunition.
One of the significant victories involved the interception of a group supplying arms and ammunition to bandits operating in Niger, Zamfara, and Kaduna States along the Abuja-Kaduna expressway. The SIS engaged in a fierce gun battle with armed bandits within the FCT-Kaduna axis, resulting in the neutralization of 3 assailants, including their leader, known as Mai-Gemu (aka Gadoro). The operation effectively dismantled the gang and its camp.

Further underscoring their commitment to curbing criminal activities, the IGP-SIS operatives arrested two major gun-running kingpins responsible for supplying locally fabricated arms and various types of ammunition to assailants in the North-Central region. Another successful operation in the Jikwoyi area of the FCT resulted in the apprehension of two kidnappers, the recovery of arms and ammunition, and the safe rescue of their abducted victim.
Inspector-General Egbetokun emphasized that the success of the SIS in the FCT serves as a prelude to its expansion to other states across the country, ensuring comprehensive security management. He has directed the strategic deployment of additional operatives to areas within the FCT experiencing security challenges to combat criminality and uphold public safety.
